Natural sites in BanskoBansko is at the foot of Pirin mountain (declared a National Park) and the numerous spots of natural beauty in it. Bansko is very near the chalets of Demyanitza, Bunderitza, Vihren as well as the top peak of Vihren. Bansko Karst springs in the area of Murtva Polyana (Dead Meadow).
Archeology in Bansko
The town of Bansko boasts many historic sites. Remains of ancient fortresses have been preserved in the Stankale locality about 4 km away of the town and also in the Julen locality (downstream Demyanitsa River). Thracian tombs have been uncovered in the area of Lisicha Mogila (Fox's Tomb). Archaeologists have unearthed a 2nd century B.C. burial site containing a set of bronze surgical instruments in the Dobrokyovitsa locality (west of Bansko). Southeast of Bansko are remains of the late-medieval churches St George and St Elijah, unique for their single-nave structure. A necropolis and an early Christian basilica are located in the area of St. Nicola.
